Choosing the first investment / Check and reassess

Check the useful result, then look for the next limit.

Measure accepted output, quality, actual cost and the financial result. Ask where work now waits and whether the next team is prepared.

Accepted work, quality and actual cost enter an owner’s review; distinct invoice/payment records and a readiness check feed the next priority.
Illustrative reconstruction of the work. The picture does not establish a result.
  1. Check the whole result

Faster work is only useful if quality and the intended business result hold.

  2. Keep the states separate

Delivery does not prove invoicing or customer payment.

  3. Reassess before widening

The next priority might be another team, a handoff, demand fit or the information foundation.

Measure the result

Step 5 of 6

Measure the result

Look at output, quality, actual cost and margin together. "The team is faster" is not where the check stops.

  1. Delivered
  2. Invoiced waiting on completion information
  3. Paid the customer's step, not proved by delivery or invoicing
  • Useful output
  • Quality
  • Actual cost
  • Financial result
  • Next team ready
Delivered, invoiced and paid stay separate. A gain in one doesn't prove a gain in the next.

Illustrative example

A delivery team completes more work, but Billing receives incomplete completion information. Delivery has improved, but the business hasn't yet turned that improvement into invoices.

Faster work helps most when it stays accurate, supports the customer and contributes to the result being pursued.

What the owner checks

  • Did useful output increase?
  • Was quality maintained?
  • What did the work actually cost?
  • Did the relevant financial result improve?
  • Was the next department ready?
  • Where did useful work start to wait?

Condition: prepare the next team before work piles up. Don't wait for a preventable failure to prove the handoff mattered.

Next: reassess →

Reassess

Step 6 of 6

Reassess

After an improvement, map the flow again. A successful change can expose a different limit.

  1. More useful sales capacity can outrun Operations
  2. Improved Operations can outrun Billing's completion and invoicing
  3. Sales, Operations and Billing all have room. Is there enough right-fit demand?
  4. Back to the evidence step 1, with the new limit
Illustrative sequence. The next limit in a real business isn't predetermined.

Return to the evidence

  • What improved?
  • What became newly limited?
  • What should be addressed next?

The next priority could be another department, a handoff, quality control, how information is structured, or demand fit.

What "back to demand" means

When Sales, Operations and Billing all have room, check whether enough right-fit customers are coming in for the capacity the business can actually deliver. AI can support research and follow-up. It doesn't create demand or payment automatically.

Improve useful work, check the result, prepare the next handoff and reassess before adding more complexity.
